My husband and I were visiting a winery in Montepulciano, Italy last fall when this scene caught my eye. As I was standing on the terrace, I looked through these trees and could see the vineyards in the valley far below and the masses of olive trees on the hills in the distance. I was struck by the contrast of the red, yellow and orange berries in the nearby trees against all the greenery far away. I knew right away this would be a painting in my Tuscany series!
In case you are wondering about the berries, they are called arbutus unedo. Arbutus is small tree native to Europe. It is colloquially called a strawberry tree because of its bright, red fruit. Nutritious and full of sugar, these berries are often used for making jams, pastries and alcohol.
Close your eyes and you are there!
