It likely won't surprise you to know this painting was a Valentine's inspiration. I had this gorgeous heart-shaped bottle with those wisps of red-black and gold floatie things just begging to be painted. Then I thought about the veil-like ribbon wrapped around the top whispering "imagine painting me!" Finally, the pearls looked like the perfect accessory to pull it all together. When I added the back lighting there was no doubt this carefully curated scene would be the next one I would paint!

The challenges:

The challenge with the bottle was mostly a matter of drawing it perfectly symmetrical so it truly was heart-shaped. It was harder than I expected!!

Painting the see-through ribbon ended up being very similar to painting glass. While there were tricky aspects, it was great fun watching it evolve.
The pearls were a matter of getting the shape of the strand and the highlights right. There were several do-overs as I attempted to capture the gentle curves! And then there was the clasp to consider.

And here you have it! All this, my friends, is why I paint. I do so love a challenge!

Thank you so much for spending a few minutes with me and my painting. It delights me to know you are all here and going along for the ride!

Warm regards,

Barbara

The Mood of the Marsh

The Mood of the Marsh

The mood of the marsh on Bald Head Island is evident as your eyes move across this painting. It is in the colors of the sky, seen reflected in the water, and the rich greens and golds of the grasses and the trees. The sense of peace you feel is also apparent as you soak in the stillness of the scene.

The marsh is one of my favorite landscapes to paint. I am always mesmerized by it's mood.

Thank you for sharing this moment with me!

Warm regards,

Barbara
