I was visiting my Aunt Mabel Jane a few months back when she excitedly pulled an old photo from her closet and asked me if I would paint it for her. The photo was Mabel Jane as a young girl, maybe 5-6 years old.
By my estimation, the photo was 80 years old. It was badly faded and blotchy, particularly around the edges. It was also hard to see important details and by no stretch of the imagination an ideal source photo for a painting. While I didn't have the heart to say no, I as admittedly concerned about how successful I could be.
I brought the age-old photo back to my studio and began to ponder how I was going to pull it off. It took a while, and the whole time I was working, I was thinking about what Aunt Mable Jane's life must have been like when she was a little girl. Here you can see the results of my efforts.
Meanwhile, Aunt Mable Jane is coming to our house for a visit on Sunday and has no idea I have been working on her painting. Imagine her surprise when she finds her younger self drying on my easel! Oh the joys of being an artist!
Stay tuned for the rest of the story!

Though the heat is still unbearable in NC, let's not forget one of the best gifts of summer - gorgeous flowers! I am thinking a flower series is in order, as this was a joy to paint. And the best thing about a painting is it lasts year 'round!!!
Photo cred: My dear friend Michelle Berrey, who grows these gorgeous flowers, creates beautiful arrangements and then photographs them too! Thank you, Michelle for so generously sharing so I can keep on painting!
