This latest painting portrays the serene nature scene of Looking Glass Falls in the mountains of NC. The focal point is the waterfall that cascades over a rocky ledge into a stream below. The area is surrounded by lush greenery, with trees framing the scene on the left. The sunlight filters through the leaves, creating dappled light and shadow across the landscape. The water in the stream reflects the natural surroundings, and the rocks and vegetation add texture and depth to the composition. The overall atmosphere is tranquil and inviting, capturing the beauty and stillness of the natural world.

The inspiration for this painting was a photo taken by my dear friend and mentor, Fred Racey, who I credit for launching my facilitation career way back in 1994. I painted this scene as a gift of acknowledgement and a small token of my appreciation for Fred for believing in me back so long ago when I was still trying to figure out how to believe in myself.

Here's to you, Fred, from the bottom of my heart and wrapped in tons of gratitude. Thank you, thank you!

Warmest regards,

Barbara

"Harmony in Warm Hues" is my latest still life painting. The classic setup features a ripe mango, a yellow ceramic bowl, and a small paring knife. The composition showcases the mango on the left with an array of warm red to green tones. A yellow bowl with a simple, rounded design stands behind and to the right of the mango. In the foreground, a small paring knife with a metallic blade and warm-colored handle complements the mango. A dark background sets off the subjects vividly, creating a sense of harmony and balance.

Inspired by the subtle interplay of everyday objects, this painting emphasizes the beauty in simplicity and mundane moments. The warm palette and careful arrangement evoke tranquility and balance. The contrast provided by the dark background makes the colors pop and adds depth to the scene. With mindful brushstrokes and an eye for detail, my goals was to make the ordinary extraordinary. I can count on oils for richness and depth every time!

"Harmony in Warm Hues" encapsulates the serene elegance of still life in a compact, vibrant composition.

Thank you for spending a moment here with me!

Warm regards,

Barbara

This week's work features a realistic painting of a black Scottish Terrier lying down on a wooden deck. The textured strokes capture his wiry fur, and attention to detail is given to its beard and eyebrows. The light and dark shades on the decking boards create depth and give a sense of the sunlight coming from above. The sunlight also creates a glow on the right side of McFie's face, helping to draw focus to him as the subject.

McFie is a very special commissioned piece, and this was a favorite spot for him to sit and gaze over the backyard, contemplating his domain. He looks so regal to me!

If you have a cherished pet photo you would like to have painted, please message me. It is incredibly humbling when people trust me to capture their precious fur babies on canvas.

Warm regards,

Barbara

Here is a still life painting featuring a bouquet of vibrant pink peonies in full bloom, contained within a white porcelain vase adorned with delicate pink floral designs. Close your eyes and you may even smell their sweet scent!

The vase rests on a wooden board that is illuminated subtly on the right side with natural sunlight. The background is a dark, black velvet, which provides a stark contrast, making the pink hues of the peonies stand out prominently. The use of light and shadow gives the composition a three-dimensional look and enhances the texture of the flower petals.

Overall, the intent of this painting is to convey a sense of classic elegance and serenity, quite fitting for this lovely flower named "Madame Emile Debatene Peony."

Thank you for spending a moment of your time here with me!

Warmest regards,

Barbara

P.S.

Don't forget Mother's Day is this weekend!

Just as the recent heat wave was bearing down on us here in NC, I decided to grab a few pansies and feature them in a small painting before they became a missed opportunity. The tiny Japanese tea cup was the perfect size for the pansies, and you likely know me well enough by now to know I love to set up my still life scenes on a wooden cutting board any time it makes sense.

I hope you enjoy the pop of color found in this last glimpse of our winter flower beds!

Thank you for being here with me!

Warm regards,

Barbara
